Lakhs of Hindu devotees in Hyderabad and Secundarabad have celebrated
Bonalu, a biggest festival of Telangana state. It is celebrated to ward off evil
and usher in peace and harmony. People in the twin cities celebrated this
festival in entire Ashada masam ( July-August).
As part of celebration, on 24 July, Sunday, the historic
Ujjaina Mahankali temple in Secunderabad and Mahankali Temple in Lal Darwaza in
Hyderbad and hundreds of small and big temples including Simhavahani Mahankali
temple in Lal Darwaza, Akkanna Madanna and Sri Bangaru Maisamma temples in Hari
Bowli, Sri Mahankaleshwari temple in Miralam Mandi, Mahankali Matheswhari temple in Gowripura,
Sri Bangaru Maisamma in Uppuguda in twin
cities were all decked up with lights and flowers.
Women devotees in traditional attire carried the “Bonalu” (
an earthen pot carrying rice, turmeric powder, jiggery, milk and curd covered
with neem leaves with a lamp placed on it) and men dancing along with
“Potharaju” to the rhythm of drums passed every small and big roads as the
state festival was in full swing. Devotees
thanked the Goddes for listening to their prayers and fulfilling wishes.
The offerings to Goddess started from early morning
Sunday and it continued till late night.
Today, the festival will conclude with “Rangam” (predicting future
for next year) by an young unmarried women in the morning and later a colourful
procession of Goddess on an elephant will be held in Hyderabad.
Cheif minister Chandrashekar Rao and several
other dignitaries of the state offered prayers to Goddess Mahankali temple and
performed special pujas.
