Bonalu or mahankali bonalu is a Hindu festival in which
Goddess Mahankali is worshipped. It is celebrated in the month of Ashada masam.
Devotees thank the Goddes for listening to their prayers and fulfilling wishes.
Bonalu is the state festival of Telangana. On the first
Sunday of Ashadam, celebrations are held at the temple at Golconda fort in
Hyderabad.
During the celebrations, women go in a trance and dance with
balancing pots (bonam).
