A budget of contradictions

S Gurumurthy
Last Updated : 19 Mar 2012 11:56:00 PM IST

The national budget for the financial year 2012-’13 mirrors the paralysis within the United Progressive Alliance coalition and government. It is a shocking theatre of conflict between the Indian sociology and Anglo-Saxon theories, of the contradictions between the intents of the finance minister and the contents of the budget, and of the minister’s confusion about what to do and what not to do in the light of his doubts about what the UPA government itself can and cannot.

Transition in Afghanistan Unravelling US Policy

Salman haidar

Totally unexpected incidents involving US troops have given a severe blow to US plans for an orderly withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2014. The burning and defiling of the Quran at a US base set in train escalating anger among the Afghans and led to a number of violent outbreaks with much loss of life.

Colombo must be sent a stern signal

India has for decades dealt with difficult neighbours to the north and west. With Sri Lanka, the relationship has been one of exceptional warmth with the people, but ties with state actors in the island nation can hardly be said to have been without complications.

Let’s stand on our feet

India may soon have to learn to live without foreign aid. The West, which sees India as a development paradox in which nearly 450 million people exist near the poverty line, can get condescending about handing out aid, even if it all goes into areas like public health rather than directly into poverty alleviation or into the defence budget.

Where will he strike next?

He is accused of being a destroyer, the one who changes parties frequently, one who strikes at will, a megalomaniac, unpredictable and a Nehru-Gandhi family baiter. Economist-turned politician, Dr Subramanian Swamy fields the volley of accusations in his inimitable style and shares his views and plan of action in an exclusive interview with K Ramachandra Murthy

Dr Subramanian Swamy, the Harvard-educated economist-turned-politician, has been a fighter throughout his political career. Coming from a family with leftist ideology, his right winged fundamentalism faced much derision. He calls Rajiv Gandhi a close friend, but has been a crusader against the Nehru-Gandhi family; his ardent Hindutva doesn’t seem to impress the BJP who are wary of inviting him into the party.
